About the research

The objective of this project is to develop a portable sensor fusion system to be carried to high-risk sites (irrespective of freeway versus intersection) for traffic conflict data collection. This system doesn’t need to be limited to a camera system. Plans are for a fusion of LIDAR and a multi-camera system that will allow us to increase accuracy significantly. Also, for intersections, it will be a good idea to obtain information on signal phasing. This would be done by using a second camera facing the intersection.

The system will be designed to be battery operated with the ability to collect one week worth of data locally. With additional funding in following years, the system will be deployed at multiple sites, and information collected from those sites and their correlation with crashes will be evaluated.
