About the research
Crash cushions are considered an acceptable alternative to shield fixed objects that cannot be removed, relocated, or shielded by longitudinal barriers. Although they are tested and submitted to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for acceptance, each state highway agency approves products for use in their state. Without nationwide guidance on which systems perform better than others, prodcut approval in Iowa rests with the Design Methods Engineer.
This study aims to develop guidance for approval of new products and reconsideration of previously apporved ones through a multi-phased approach. The aim is to quantify the const-effectiveness of various crash cusions in consideration of various traffic, road geometry, and crash cushion characteristics.
