Description

During the week of February 22-25 and Monday, March 1, work zone traffic control and safety training will be offered virtually so that workers across the state can participate conveniently. The workshop will cover current revisions in the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), particularly Part 6.

The workshops consist of a general session for all participants, plus breakout sessions that will be scheduled throughout the week tailored to specific categories of work zone activities: city, county, utility, Iowa DOT construction and contractors, and Iowa DOT maintenance.

Who Should Attend?

The MUTCD recommends that all workers (and their supervisors) whose duties place them on or near the traveled portion of  roadways regularly complete work zone traffic control training. The Iowa Work Zone Safety Workshops provide this valuable training. It is not necessary to attend a work zone safety workshop every year; every three years is recommended. Within an organization, workers’ attendance can be rotated systematically, making it possible for staff at all levels to attend every few years.

For anyone interested in Iowa DOT specifications and requirements, the Iowa DOT Construction and Contractors breakout session may be most appropriate. The City breakout session may be best for workers interested in urban work zone applications. The Iowa DOT Maintenance breakout sessions are specifically designed for Iowa DOT staff.

In addition to street and road agencies, contractors, consultant engineering staff, vendors, and suppliers in the road construction industry are welcome to participate and are encouraged to register for the same breakout session categories as those with whom they do business.

Workshop Objectives

  • To introduce the principles and convey the importance of using proper methods for safe and efficient temporary traffic  control at work sites.
  • To examine specific applications relevant to situations routinely encountered by city, county, utility, contractor, and Iowa DOT crews.
  • To reduce motor vehicle traffic crashes at road work sites, resulting in greater safety for highway users and workers alike.
