Description

This webinar will cover topics related to designing and maintaining roads in areas with large Amish populations based on experiences in Elkhart County, Indiana. Some of the topics covered will include: coordination with the Amish community, implementation of buggy plates and user fees for non-motorized vehicles, characteristic road distresses caused by horse usage and maintenance options to address these impacts, and adaptation of intersection sight distance design parameters for horse-drawn vehicles.

Speaker Bios

Charlie McKenzie serves as the county engineer for the Elkhart County Highway Department located in Goshen, Indiana. He is responsible for managing capital projects of varying size as well as the day-to-day operations of the engineering division of the department. He has been with the county for seven years now in various roles and was in consulting prior.

Jay Grossman is an assistant professor of civil engineering at Valparaiso University in northwest Indiana, where his teaching and research are focused on traffic, transportation design, and safety. Previously, he worked for over 10 years at a county highway department, including 6 years as the county engineer.
