2016 AASHTO Bridge Competition comes to Iowa
The annual 2016 National Bridge Competition was held this year in Des Moines, Iowa, during the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Spring Meeting in late May. Nine teams, consisting of students from 7–12th grades, from Mississippi, Michigan, and New Hampshire, traveled to Iowa to construct a bridge and present on their design and construction process to a panel of judges.
The Iowa Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University, hosted a STEM-related field trip prior to the competition. Students toured the Virtual Reality Center at ISU and the BioCentury Research Farm and rode the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad before taking the future of transportation into their own hands.
