Graduate student wins best paper award

Yongsung Koh

Yongsung Koh, a doctoral student with the Program for Sustainable Pavement Engineering Research (PROSPER), recently earned the Best Paper Award at the 2022 International Conference for Road Engineers (ICRE) held in Jeju, South Korea.

Koh earned the award for a paper entitled “Mechanistic-Based Damage Cost Evaluation of Concrete Pavement Systems Subjected to Superloads,” and received the recognition after presenting on the research.

The research project, led by PROSPER Director Halil Ceylan, that the paper stemmed from aims to develop approaches to quantify superloads—substantially over current vehicle weight limits—and their impact on the road infrastructure system.

The paper’s co-authors include Ceylan and co-principal investigators on the research project PROSPER Associate Director Sunghwan Kim and Iowa State University Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) Associate Professor In-Ho Cho.

The project is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB).

“Interacting with other researchers and presenters and receiving good feedback at the conference was a great experience,” Koh said. “It has been a fantastic experience working with Drs. Halil Ceylan, Sunghwan Kim, and In-Ho Cho on this paper and research project.”
