InTrans students win Midwestern Traffic Bowl, qualify for national finals

The size of a stop sign stumped them, but Iowa State University’s Transportation Student Association team members knew most of the other answers en route to winning the Midwestern District ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) Collegiate Traffic Bowl, June 30 in Branson, MO.
The district win was the team’s second in three years and qualifies it for the Grand Championship at the ITE International Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Hollywood, FL, August 2-5. The ISU team is one of nine collegiate squads competing in the national finals. The team also competed in the Grand Championship in 2013.
Institute for Transportation(InTrans) graduate students Georges Bou-Saab, Andrew Houchin, Micah Makaiwi, and alternate Emmanuel Nketah took part in the Jeopardy-style competition covering a variety of transportation planning and engineering topics. Other students attending the conference were Chenhui Liu, Fugang Sheng, Navid Rad, Raha Hamzeie, and Sneha Roy.
The Transportation Student Association faculty adviser is Jing Dong, assistant professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineeringand a transportation engineer at InTrans.
For the record, the standard size for many stop signs are 30-by-30 or 36-by-36 inches, says Paul Wiegand, director of the Statewide Urban Design and Specifications program at InTrans.
