New Concrete Pavement Distress manual available

The Guide for Concrete Pavement Distress Assessments and Solutions: Identification, Causes, Prevention, and Repair, a comprehensive new guide to identifying, understanding, and mitigating concrete pavement distresses, has been issued by the National Concrete Pavement Technology (CP Tech) Center.

Selecting a pavement preservation strategy that does not address the root cause of a distress can result in wasted resources and added inconvenience to the public. This up-to-date manual incorporates proven and cost-effective solutions into a framework that assists in matching the appropriate solution(s) to a given distress. The text will be valuable for transportation agency personnel and consulting engineers who are responsible for managing concrete pavement assets.

Chapters in the new manual cover these topics:

  • surface defects
  • surface delamination
  • material-related cracks
  • transverse and diagonal cracking
  • longitudinal cracking
  • corner cracking
  • spalling
  • faulting
  • joint curling and warping
  • blowups
  • subgrades and base support conditions
  • continuously reinforced concrete pavement
  • concrete overlay
  • bonded concrete overlay on asphalt
  • bonded concrete overlay on concrete
  • unbonded concrete overlay on asphalt
  • unbonded concrete overlay on concrete
  • field evaluation and laboratory testing procedures

Other issues that receive attention include monitoring pavement performance, developing project concepts, developing and administering pavement repair projects, and overseeing system maintenance. The guide clearly addresses all these elements in a user-friendly, uncomplicated, and comprehensive manner.

The manual was developed as part of a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) cooperative agreement to support more sustainable concrete pavement technical solutions.
