About Hossein

Dr. Naraghi is a senior research engineer at the Institute for Transportation’s Center for Transportation Research and Education. Dr. Naraghi has more than 20 years of professional experience in transportation engineering and construction management. He conducts research on various safety-related projects on the safety and operational impacts of drivers, roadways, and environmental characteristics. He also conducts research in the areas of road maintenance and operations.

  • Research Engineer, Institute for Transportation, 2016–present, Ames, IA
    • Conduct research related to the roadway safety and operational impacts of  design elements in improving roadway safety
    • Provide input for the development and maintenance of transportation-related databases, approaches, and procedures
    • Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgements in making adaptations and modifications in transportation-related projects
    • Apply high-level technical tools for safety officials to enhance their data driven decision-making process

    • Conducted research on safety implications and driver behavior at work zones by analyzing the SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study Data, to determine how drivers negotiate work zones and to identify factors present when safety critical situations arise as compared to normal work zone driving.
    • Utilized ArcGIS tools to integrate pavement conditions on local roads for various surface types throughout the State of Iowa as part of Iowa Pavement Management Program and provided the results to districts, cities, and MPOs
    • Directed recruitment and training of graduate and undergraduate students for development of Iowa Intersection Database to create a database of over 165,000 intersections in Iowa
    • Developed bridge deterioration models to determine life expectancy and failure probability for Iowa state bridges using PONTIS and SIMS bridge condition data and utilizing the National Bridge Inventory Guide
