About Yaohua

Dr. Deng is a research engineer at the Bridge Engineering Center. As a registered professional engineer in Iowa, Deng has more than ten years of experience in the field of structural/bridge engineering. Since dedicating himself to research involving the evaluation and continued monitoring and advancement of the safety, durability, and efficiency of bridge infrastructures, he has published 18 peer-reviewed technical journal articles and has 2 pending patent applications. He has also presented at 10 prestigious academic conferences, including the Transportation Research Board’s Annual Meeting and Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference.

Due to his research activities, Dr. Deng has notable experience in the areas of performance evaluation of bridges through lab/field testing and structural health monitoring, the establishment and calibration of rigorous finite element models, and development and improvement of guidelines and codified specifications. Some examples of this include the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Bridge Design Manuals and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official’s Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications.
