Fundamental Research and Development of Cellular Stress Laminated Timber Bridge Decks for Short to Medium Span Bridges
Following the successful implementation of stress laminated timber bridge deck technology for decks spanning up to 9 m, a collaborative research initiative was commenced by the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW and the University of Technology, Sydney early in 1993, to undertake fundamental research and development of cellular bridge decks using stress laminated timber technology. This has involved both full scale serviceability and ultimate load testing as well as an examination and analytical investigation into fundamental behaviour of cellular structural forms constructed from timber elements. This paper presents the preliminary findings of on-going research at UTS and discusses the implications of it for timber bridges.
