Performance Level 1 Bridge Railings for Timber Decks
Historically, very little research has been conducted for developing crashworthy railing systems for timber bridge decks. For timber to be a viable material in the new construction of bridges, the vehicular railing systems must be developed and crash tested. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, in conjunction with the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, undertook the task of developing and testing three bridge railings. As part of the project, a series of four full-scale crash tests were conducted on the bridge railing design.
