About the research

The research team (the team) worked with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of Design to develop a three-dimensional (3D), full-scale, fully immersive, highly interactive virtual reality model of the I-35/U.S. 30 interchange (the interchange). The development will target visualization and interaction of the interchange with a HTC Vive head-mounted display system.

To further examine the field of visibility, there is a need to add relevant simulated traffic patterns. The Iowa DOT team will provide the research team with average daily traffic (ADT) information. The research team will then create simulations of traffic based on the pattern provided on the I-35 north band and on the flyover.

Then, a visibility assessment will be conducted with the physical driving apparatus to create a portrait of the visibility field for the US30/I-35 north ramp merge and the I-35 south/U.S. 30 west ramp.
