About the research

Nationally, a significant amount of effort has been invested into accelerate bridge construction (ABC) methods, designs, and projects. At the same time, development and integration of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) into bridge projects has increased as well; often times the use of ABC and UHPC being interdependent on one another. To date, integral abutments designs are seeing increased use though they are one design feature yet to be realized in the lateral slide sector of ABC.  Development and testing of means and methods to construct bridges in an accelerated time frame, and, incorporating integral abutments and all their inherent benefits would greatly benefit the bridge community. The focus of this research is to develop an integral abutment detail that facilitates lateral slide construction methods and utilize UHPC for the connection. A full-scale specimen will be designed, constructed in the laboratory, and tested to service level loads for evaluation.
