Apply now for new pilot Engineering Student Internship Program summer 2012 openings

Applications are being accepted through noon Mon., Feb. 20. Interviews of selected applicants will be conducted Feb. 27. Fifty (50) interns will be hired for summer 2012 (May-Aug.) at $14.05/hour.

Only full-time students qualify. (May 2012 graduates are not eligible for this opportunity unless enrolled full-time in a graduate program in the fall 2012 semester.)

This program is sponsored by the Iowa DOT in partnership with InTrans.

The interns will work at Iowa DOT offices, labs, and work sites across Iowa, 40 hours per week through the summer. Interns will gain practical experience in areas such as road design, bridge design, materials, traffic/safety, and field construction inspection. Interns will be required to submit periodic written reports and make oral presentations to summarize their internship efforts, outcomes, and relevance to their degree programs and career aspirations. Interns also will be required to participate in relevant meetings and orientation and training sessions. These co-curricular activities will complement students’ course work and lab experiences in their respective undergraduate degree programs.

The purpose of the program is to supplement the DOT staff with temporary hires while providing students with excellent technical real-world experience. At the end of the summer the interns will have gained increased technical and non-technical skills relating to their engineering curriculum and will have a greater understanding of the field of engineering and the technical areas they are interested in pursuing as practicing engineers.

Iowa DOT managers will supervise the student work and assign duties. They will work with faculty at InTrans to evaluate student reports, and with InTrans staff on administrative matters related to the internship program.
