About the research
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS2000) indicated that although significant accident reduction has been achieved in every category of transportation, many of the aproaches used to achieve that reduction, such as educational campaigns or enforcement initiatives, have reached their performance limit. Consequently, in order to achieve additional safety improvements, improved analysis of high-quality accident data is necessary to identify patterns and underlying causes of crashes. This project will identify all roadway geometric and operational factors that have been correlated to safety. The existing DOT databases would be identified and linked to existing safety inrofmation. The timeliness and quality of the data will be evaluated and the need for more specific data documented. A database linking the various datasets will also be created. Secondly, once gaps in the existing data and additional data needs are identified, a pilot study will be undertaken to determine the feasibility of collecting and utilizing outside sources of information for improved intersection safety analysis.
