About the research

In the near future, due to a series of retirements and/or adjustments in personnel or job descriptions, a reduction in the current number of Work Zone Safety Workshops instructors will occur. In addition, there are several other work zone safety trainings, including self-taught efforts, which are offered here in Iowa, online, and throughout the United States. It was determined that there was a need to evaluate, through a comprehensive review, the opportunities that exist today for Iowa transportation professionals in the area of work zone safety, and to determine how they might be used in Iowa to continue this very important training and technical transfer.

The objective of this project is to evaluate the work zone safety training opportunities that exist for the wide variety of Iowa transportation professionals interested in these subjects. The project team, working with the Technical Advisory Committee, will investigate what customers are using for work zone safety training in Iowa. The content of the current work zone safety training opportunities being used in Iowa and the needs of those being served will also be reviewed. Finally, additional online and national opportunities that are available will be identified and summarized. Current customers will also be sought out to determine their preferred type of instruction. The overall goal is to develop a plan to comprehensively provide work zone safety training in Iowa to those that need it. If funding remains, materials may also gathered and/or developed to begin the recommended adjustments.
