About the research

This project is part of the main Iowa Department of Transportation-sponsored project, “Iowa DOT Operations Division Cooperative Autonomous Transportation (CAT) Research Support.”

The USDOT hosted a Roundtable on Data for Automated Vehicle Safety in December 2017 in addition to a Public Listening Summit on Automated Vehicle Policy in March 2018. These events inspired the Work Zone Data Exchange project, which was meant to jumpstart voluntary adoption of a basic work zone data specification and enable collaborative maintenance and expansion of the specification.

Work will include providing Iowa data where possible as well as well as identifying and discussing methodologies. InTrans staff will work with participant states in consideration of common data standards, formats, as well as data accessibility, quality, and security. InTrans will share the on-going work of the TCP program as well as convey how data are managed and used for calculations on IWZ projects. This includes sharing of opinions and practice with the group in terms of access, content, and Iowa-based work zone experiences and challenges. InTrans will support committee work on behalf of Iowa DOT where relevant toward establishing a work zone data specification as well as considering how this will be published and consumed in Iowa.
